At least four people have died and 14 others are receiving medical treatment after ingesting a potentially toxic herbal mixture purchased in Oju township, the administrative center of Oju Local Government Area in Benue State.
The incident came to light during the Ihiejwo market day, where three men sold the herbal concoction to residents of the Igede community. Eyewitness accounts suggest that symptoms began appearing in those who consumed the mixture shortly after purchasing it.
The first reported death occurred on Tuesday morning, with three more fatalities following on Wednesday and November 4. The 14 individuals still in care include several who are in critical condition.
Local authorities apprehended the three individuals involved in the sale, identified as Alhaji Mai Magamani, Mohamed, and Musa Kolo. They were turned over to law enforcement as community leaders sought to ensure a thorough investigation. The case is now being handled by the Benue State Police Command.
Comrade John-Frank Ozzidi, President of the Igede Youth Council, emphasized the need for justice and urged the state government to account for the matter, as community members opted for legal action over vigilantism.
Mr. Jackson Ominyi, Chairman of the Oju Local Government Council, confirmed the incident but noted that he had not yet verified the death toll. As of his latest update, three deaths had been reported, and he is working with local health authorities to manage the situation.
Efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer for additional comments were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
