The Abia State Police has initiated an investigation following the recovery of a missing landlady’s body found in a soakaway pit in her neighbor’s compound in Umueleghele, within the Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area.
Police Commissioner AIG Wilfred Afolabi confirmed the grim discovery on November 6, 2026, during a news briefing. He indicated that the matter is under active investigation.
The landlady’s disappearance had previously led to community alarm, with residents initially presuming she had traveled. However, concern grew as days passed without any sign of her. Community efforts—including involvement from the traditional ruler and local youth—were mobilized for search operations across various terrains, including farms and uncompleted buildings.
According to a source within the community, the search ultimately led to the identification of her remains inside a 30-foot deep soakaway pit. Allegations have surfaced suggesting the woman was involved in a land dispute with a local man, referred to as ‘New World,’ who allegedly sought to acquire a portion of her land. These claims imply a possible connection to her disappearance, though they remain unverified, and police have not named any suspects.
The source also indicated that there were indications of foul play, including reports of acid being poured into the pit, and noted that some parts of the woman’s body were missing upon discovery. Authorities have yet to confirm the specifics of these claims or suggest any ritualistic implications as the investigation continues.
Local reports mention that the suspected individual has been handed over to the police for further inquiry.
