In a peaceful demonstration, hundreds of youths in Ebonyi State marched through the capital, Abakaliki, advocating for the cessation of political violence and intimidation directed at opposition members as the 2027 general elections approach. Organized by the Concerned Ebonyi Youth for Democracy, participants came from all 13 local government areas to voice their demands for a safe political atmosphere where all citizens can engage without fear.
The march featured various placards carrying messages such as “Democracy Needs Peaceful Ideas, Not Weapons” and “Protect Freedom of Speech in Ebonyi.” During the rally, a spokesperson for the group emphasized that the youths would not tolerate any efforts to undermine their constitutional rights. They highlighted that the right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly was fundamental and non-negotiable.
Concerns were raised regarding instances of alleged physical violence and intimidation reportedly faced by opposition figures across the state. The spokesperson stated, “We will not sit by while political thuggery and intimidation threaten to ruin our state’s democratic process. Every citizen, regardless of party alignment, deserves to participate without fear for their safety.”
Another coordinator added that opposition parties should be allowed to campaign and engage with voters free from threats of violence, stressing the need for a level playing field for all political entities. The group’s efforts represent a push for accountability and the promotion of peaceful political participation as the electoral period draws near.
