The Abia State Government has announced the organization of the 2026 African Diaspora Conference and Expo (Africando), scheduled for November 17-19 in the state capital, Umuahia. This initiative is part of the government’s strategy to leverage the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), a U.S. economic development program, to enhance trade opportunities for African products on the international stage.
Caleb Ajagba, Chief of Staff to Governor Alex Otti, highlighted that the choice of Abia as the host was influenced by the state’s transformation into an industrial hub. He noted that the current administration has prioritized infrastructure, security, power supply, manpower development, and entrepreneurship to tap into the state’s potential.
Ajagba emphasized Abia’s robust manufacturing industry, particularly in the city of Aba, stating that it holds opportunities for international business partnerships. He mentioned that the aim of Africando is to provide critical resources for small and medium-sized enterprises and facilitate access to funding and equipment.
In addition to focusing on practical economic benefits, the state government has simplified the registration process for interested participants, ensuring widespread involvement in the conference.
Fred Oladeinde, President of the Foundation for Democracy in Africa, announced plans to establish a trade center and a civil society network to enhance access to international markets for local businesses. This initiative aims to strengthen trade connections among manufacturers and entrepreneurs in Aba.
The Africando conference will explore the theme ‘Deepening U.S – Africa Commercial Ties in the Area of AfCFTA and AGOA,’ discussing various sectors, including agriculture, consumer goods, financial services, insurance, and healthcare. The event will also feature the presentation of the Medal of Glory Award to distinguished Africans and the launch of the trade center and civil society network.
