Chief Ademola Folarin, the General Secretary of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organization Afenifere, has responded to rumors surrounding a leadership crisis and future endorsements within the group. In a recent interview, Folarin confirmed that Afenifere has officially endorsed President Bola Tinubu for the upcoming 2027 elections, asserting that there are no viable alternatives at this time.
Folarin criticized the current state of political discourse in Nigeria, claiming that adversarial politics often undermines democratic processes. He noted that mudslinging is a common practice, making it necessary for parties to attack one another to rise politically. Folarin emphasized the importance of alternative systems of governance while reiterating Afenifere’s commitment to Tinubu based on his experience and past performance.
Regarding internal disagreements, Folarin addressed the controversy following the death of former leader Pa Reuben Fasoranti. He emphasized the necessity of respecting Fasoranti’s legacy and suggested that discussing leadership succession in the wake of his death is inappropriate. Folarin expressed hopes for reconciliation among members, noting ongoing efforts despite temporary setbacks caused by burial arrangements.
Folarin asserted that Afenifere remains unified, despite indications of factionalism, and stressed the group’s overarching objective: to promote the interests of the Yoruba people and uphold Nigerian unity. He acknowledged that while some members may support other candidates, the group as a whole maintains a collective vision that supersedes individual ambitions.
As discussions around leadership continue, Folarin clarified that there are no formal plans to install a new leader until after Fasoranti’s memorial proceedings. He stated that any future leadership decision will come from a consensus among the elders and leaders of the organization.
