Aisha Babangida is recognized for her extensive contributions to women’s empowerment and girl-child education throughout Africa. In 2016, she established Egwafin Microfinance Bank, a licensed organization aimed at providing microloans, credit, and financial services to small-scale market women and individuals often overlooked by commercial banks.
Babangida leads several initiatives, including the Better Life Programme for the African Rural Woman (BLPARW), founded by her mother, Maryam Babangida, in 1987. This program, which she took over in 2009, aims to enhance the social, economic, and educational status of rural women who play a crucial role in Nigeria’s agricultural sector yet face significant barriers to resources.
Under Aisha’s leadership, BLPARW has expanded to include adult literacy, vocational training, agricultural advancement, and support for youth and education. It also emphasizes financial literacy and business skills for women.
In 2018, Aisha initiated the Women Enterprise Alliance (WenA), which focuses on investing in and mentoring women-led small and medium-sized enterprises across Nigeria and Africa. This initiative is designed to train groups of 1,000 women entrepreneurs at a time, helping them develop sustainable business strategies.
The Tasnim Foundation, another one of her founding efforts, prioritizes girl-child education, offering scholarships, building community schools, and supporting orphanages and healthcare for vulnerable children and displaced families.
Aisha Babangida also hosts the AIB Founders’ Award, which provides direct corporate support to emerging African businesses. Each of these organizations operates with clearly defined roles, allowing for transparency and accountability in their initiatives.
As she continues her work at the Women Development Centre in Abuja, Babangida maintains partnerships with governmental and international development entities to ensure her programs remain active and impactful.
