The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has rejected assertions that its gas transportation infrastructure is contributing to the decline in electricity generation throughout the nation. In a recent statement, NNPC stated that its pipelines are fully operational and capable of transporting gas to power plants without any hindrances.
Andy Odeh, the Chief Corporate Communications Officer, emphasized that the gas transportation network operated by NNPC’s subsidiary, NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company Limited (NGIC), is functioning efficiently, and there are no records indicating that transportation constraints are a factor in the current reduction of electricity generation.
This clarification follows remarks by the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), which indicated that limited gas supply and reduced water levels at hydroelectric facilities are significant contributors to lower electricity output. NNPC’s statement specifically highlights the operational status of NGIC’s transportation network.
Recently, electricity supply has significantly decreased in major urban areas such as Lagos and Abuja, exacerbating existing concerns about the nation’s electricity supply due to rising temperatures and the impending end of the rainy season. The ongoing power outages have created additional challenges for businesses and households, especially with petrol prices still high. Some citizens are increasingly relying on solar power systems and inverters to cope with the electricity shortages.
Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, attributed the nationwide outages to planned maintenance at the Egbin Power Station, along with gas supply constraints that have reduced the available electricity on the national grid. He noted that efforts are underway to restore the affected generating units in phases, with some units expected to come back online within the next few days.
Despite the minister’s statements, NNPC maintains that its gas transportation systems do not face challenges and reiterated its commitment to enhancing electricity generation by ensuring a reliable gas supply. The company pointed out that assessments regarding electricity shortages should also consider factors such as gas production, supply arrangements, and the operating status of power plants.
NNPC highlighted the importance of comprehensive cooperation among gas suppliers, transportation networks, and power producers to accurately identify barriers in the electricity supply chain. The company is committed to supporting initiatives that effectively utilize Nigeria’s gas resources to generate reliable electricity.
