Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has urged President Bola Tinubu to clarify the use of ₦15.8 trillion saved from the removal of fuel subsidies and the more than $100 billion borrowed by his administration. Obi’s demand comes a day after Tinubu criticized him during an All Progressives Congress (APC) rally in Akwa Ibom State.
In a recent social media post, Obi congratulated Tinubu on spending a night outside Lagos and Abuja, while encouraging him to engage with more Nigerian states and account for the resources under his administration. Obi commented on Tinubu’s limited visits, highlighting his extended time spent outside Nigeria since taking office.
Obi emphasized that Nigerians deserve transparency regarding how the government has used the financial resources, including metrics on poverty reduction, access to education, the establishment of primary healthcare centers, and improvements in electricity supply. He questioned the government on its performance against promises made, specifically regarding security and essential service improvements.
The former governor of Anambra stated that a new Nigeria should be built on accountability and measurable impacts on citizens’ lives, asserting that citizens have the right to know how resources have been managed.
