A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) headed by Kabiru Turaki is evaluating the implications of a recent Court of Appeal ruling that affirmed the leadership of the Wike-supported faction as the authentic authority of the party. Turaki announced that the faction’s legal team is examining the judgement and may decide to contest it at the Supreme Court.
This development was highlighted during a solidarity visit by a group of governorship candidates who obtained nomination forms from Turaki’s faction. During the gathering in Abuja, the candidates expressed their support and encouraged the faction’s leadership to formulate a strategy aimed at unifying party members, especially at the grassroots level.
Turaki emphasized the faction’s determination to regain recognition as the legitimate leadership of the PDP and indicated that his legal team would convene to assess the judgement further. The Court of Appeal had dismissed a challenge from the Turaki faction, which claimed that its own Interim National Working Committee should be recognized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The appeal was initially rejected by the Federal High Court, a decision upheld by the appellate court.
Turaki expressed optimism about the outcome of a potential Supreme Court appeal, stating that a favorable ruling could facilitate the participation of his factional candidates in the 2027 general elections. He asserted that if recognized, his faction would enable PDP candidates to secure electoral victories, heralding a new era for the party.
He also called on party members to remain calm and supportive despite the recent court decision and alleged attempts by unnamed forces to disrupt the party’s unity. Engaging with the party’s grassroots and maintaining communication to mitigate misinformation were highlighted as essential steps in overcoming the current leadership crisis.
