Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has condemned recent violent attacks targeting party members and coordinators of the Obidient Movement in Delta State. In a statement shared on his X platform, Obi described these incidents as deeply disturbing and emphasized that political violence has no place in a democratic society.
Obi urged the Delta State Government and relevant security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the attacks, hold accountable those responsible regardless of their political affiliations, and ensure justice is served. He asserted that no political ambition justifies compromising the safety and lives of Nigerian citizens, advocating for resolution of disagreements through peaceful and lawful means.
Highlighting the inappropriate use of intimidation and violence for gaining political influence, Obi stated that authority in politics should derive from the trust of the populace rather than coercing opponents. He noted that the NDC would not be deterred from exercising its democratic rights and underscored the necessity for security agencies to protect citizens’ safety.
Obi maintained his commitment to a peaceful political discourse and reiterated every Nigerian’s constitutional right to organize, assemble, and participate in the electoral process free from fear. He expressed solidarity with those affected by the attacks and reaffirmed that Nigeria’s future should be grounded in justice, liberty, peace, and respect for all citizens’ dignity.
