Comedian and actor Russell Brand has been remanded in custody at HMP Wandsworth following a conviction for one count of defilement and three counts of assault relating to defilement. A judge denied bail after Brand’s guilty verdict was delivered on November 5 at Southwark Crown Court.
Mr. Justice Bennathan informed Brand that he faces a significant custodial sentence, with sentencing scheduled for November 9.
Brand is currently held in the prison’s Care and Separation Unit, a facility designed for inmate security, where he has limited interaction with other prisoners. Officers have expressed concerns about Brand’s safety based on his high profile, even within a unit designed for vulnerable inmates.
A source indicated that upon his arrival at the facility, Brand appeared shaken and quiet. The decision to separate him from the general prison population stems from apprehensions regarding potential risks associated with his celebrity status and the nature of his offenses.
Upon entry to the prison, Brand was subjected to searches and medical assessments, where he disclosed any medications he was using. He received standard issue prison clothing, personal care items, and a minimal food supply. He was also offered a Bible and permitted a brief phone call, although details regarding the call have not been disclosed.
In addition to his current legal troubles, the Metropolitan Police are reportedly investigating two further allegations of defilement against Brand. Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy remarked that the conviction is a testament to the bravery of the women who came forward, reaffirming the need for support for victims of such crimes.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham characterized Brand’s offenses as horrifying and commended the survivors for their courage in coming forward. He noted that although conviction rates for defilement cases have improved, further progress is necessary to ensure justice.
