In the Senegalese capital Dakar, hundreds of protesters have gathered, urging for elections to take place before the conclusion of President Macky Sall’s term on 2 April. The postponement of last month’s elections by Mr. Sall, coupled with the absence of a new date announcement, ignited significant protests.
During the demonstrations on Saturday, March 2, 2024, participants representing opposition parties and advocacy groups labeled the president as a dictator and called for the release of opposition leader Ousmane Sonko, who is currently in prison.
Political crisis discussions convened last week, orchestrated by the president yet boycotted by the opposition, saw delegates recommending elections to be held in June.
