Nigeria has been thrown into mourning following the killing of a kidnapped teacher in Oyo State after armed bandits attacked schools in the Oriire Local Government Area of the state.
The victim, identified as Michael Oyedokun, was among teachers and pupils abducted during the attack on schools in the Esiele community last Friday. Reports say the gunmen invaded Community Grammar School, Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and L.A. Primary School, causing panic as students and staff fled for safety.
A disturbing video allegedly released by the kidnappers later surfaced online showing the teacher tied up before he was reportedly beheaded by the attackers. The incident has sparked outrage and renewed concerns about insecurity and attacks on schools in Nigeria.
Reacting to the development, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu condemned the killing, describing it as barbaric and heartbreaking. In a statement released on Monday, May 18, 2026, the President assured residents of Oyo State that security agencies were intensifying operations to rescue the remaining abducted victims and track down those responsible for the crime.
Tinubu also commended the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies for deploying tactical and intelligence teams to the affected area. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to crushing banditry and restoring safety in schools and rural communities across the country.
Meanwhile, teachers in Oyo State staged protests over the abduction and killing of their colleague, demanding stronger protection for schools and urgent government action against rising insecurity. The demonstrations reflected growing frustration among education workers and parents who fear for the safety of children and teachers.
Authorities in Oyo State confirmed that several suspects connected to the kidnapping have already been arrested, while efforts continue to secure the release of those still being held captive.
