A fresh political war of words has erupted between the Presidency and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, following his call for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to resign over what he described as worsening economic hardship and governance failures in Nigeria.
The controversy was triggered by the reported resignation announcement of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Reacting to the development, Obi argued that political leaders should accept responsibility when they fail to meet the expectations of citizens. He urged Tinubu to emulate what he described as Starmer’s example of accountability and step aside in view of Nigeria’s economic difficulties, insecurity and declining living standards.
In a statement posted on his social media platform, Obi said leaders must be willing to take responsibility for policy failures and governance shortcomings. He maintained that Nigerians are facing unprecedented hardship and that those in authority should acknowledge when their policies are not producing the desired results.
The Presidency quickly pushed back against Obi’s remarks. Presidential aides described the opposition leader’s demand as “childish,” “hollow,” and “puerile,” insisting that President Tinubu remains focused on implementing reforms aimed at stabilizing the economy and addressing long-standing national challenges.
Government officials argued that many of the economic difficulties currently facing Nigerians stem from structural problems inherited over several administrations and cannot be resolved overnight. They defended Tinubu’s policies, saying recent reforms are beginning to yield positive results despite the temporary hardships experienced by citizens.
The exchange has further intensified political tensions ahead of the 2027 presidential election, where Obi is expected to once again challenge Tinubu. Analysts say the latest confrontation highlights the increasingly sharp battle between the ruling party and opposition forces as political campaigns gradually gather momentum.
The dispute has also reignited debates among Nigerians over political accountability, leadership responsibility and whether elected officials should resign when confronted with mounting public dissatisfaction. While Obi’s supporters praised his comments as a call for responsible governance, Tinubu’s allies dismissed the demand as political grandstanding aimed at attracting attention ahead of the next election cycle.
