Panic swept through the Mushin area of Lagos on Monday after a suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED) detonated beneath a vehicle, leaving one person injured and triggering a major security response.
The incident occurred around the Shoe Materials Market on Wey Street in Oke Mushin, a busy commercial district known for its concentration of traders and artisans. Residents reported hearing a loud explosion shortly before 6 a.m., causing fear and confusion throughout the area.
According to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Tijani, preliminary investigations indicate that the blast was caused by an IED planted beneath the passenger side of a Toyota Sienna vehicle. The device reportedly exploded when the owner started the vehicle’s engine.
The vehicle owner sustained injuries and was immediately taken to a hospital for treatment. Police authorities later confirmed that the victim was in stable condition. No fatalities were recorded in the incident.
Following the explosion, officers from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit cordoned off the area and carried out an extensive search to determine whether additional explosive devices had been planted nearby. After several hours of investigation, police announced that no other explosives were found.
Investigators recovered fragments of the suspected explosive device, which have been taken for forensic examination. Authorities say efforts are underway to determine who planted the device and the motive behind the attack.
The incident has renewed concerns about public safety in Lagos, particularly following previous explosive-related incidents recorded in parts of the state over the past year. However, the police have urged residents and traders to remain calm, assuring the public that the situation is under control and that security has been strengthened around the affected area.
