Lagos is grappling with severe flooding as torrential rainfall halted commercial and vehicular activities across the city. The downpour, which began at noon and continued until around 4 p.m., inundated major highways and inner-city roads, stranding motorists and commuters alike.
Key routes such as the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Ikorodu Road, and Apapa-Oshodi Expressway were severely affected, creating hours-long traffic jams. Many vehicles became immobilized in rising waters, while others broke down, exacerbating the already congested streets.
As public transport operators suspended services due to safety concerns, numerous commuters were forced to trek long distances to reach their destinations. Local residents attributed the flooding to blocked drainage systems, indiscriminate waste disposal, and poor infrastructure maintenance.
Motorists expressed distress over the situation, with one individual describing his experience traversing the flood on the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway as akin to swimming. Calls for government action to address refuse accumulation and drainage maintenance have intensified.
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency had forecast significant rainfall in recent days, urging vigilance among residents in vulnerable areas. Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment, Tokunbo Wahab, responded to the flooding, assuring citizens that the situation would improve shortly. He emphasized that flash flooding is typical in coastal cities during heavy rain and should not be mistaken for prolonged flooding.
Wahab highlighted the state’s ongoing drainage maintenance efforts and the importance of public cooperation in maintaining a flood-free environment. He explained that factors such as high lagoon water levels can hinder stormwater drainage, contributing to flash floods. He called for responsible waste management and adherence to environmental regulations.
Despite challenges presented by severe weather, the government has made strides in enhancing drainage infrastructure, which has helped mitigate the effects of flooding over time. Officials are keen on fostering collaboration with relevant agencies to tackle the issue effectively.
