The 2026 World Cup final match of Lionel Messi, the “God of Football”, ended in humiliation. Argentina left a shameful record on the final stage.
Argentina lost 0-1 to Spain after extra time in the final of the 2026 Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup in North America, held at the New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, United States, on the 20th (Korean time), failing to lift the championship trophy.
Throughout the match, Argentina sat deep and struggled to block Spain’s attacks. Even Messi, who had played a pivotal role in leading the team to the final, barely touched the ball.
The entire team struggled under Spain’s intense pressure and could not even dream of launching proper counterattacks.
Injuries further compounded the problems. Lisandro Martínez was substituted due to pain in the closing minutes of the first half, and Cristian Romero collapsed just before the hydration break in the second half. Argentina had to hastily deploy Nicolás Otamendi and Facundo Medina, forming an entirely new center-back partnership.
Spain’s shot count kept increasing, yet Argentina managed to hold on without conceding for a long time. They rarely allowed decisive opportunities, and even the occasional shots were repeatedly saved by goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez.
However, Argentina ended the second half in the worst possible way. Fernández, who already had a yellow card, received a second yellow for a dangerous challenge on Kvaratskhelia and was sent off. He protested furiously, but the referee showed no hesitation in issuing the red card.
With 10 players, Argentina could no longer hold out. In the 106th minute of extra time, they collapsed after conceding a goal to Ferran Torres. Julián Simeone’s shot in stoppage time sailed high over the crossbar, and the match ended in Spain’s victory.
This marked Spain’s second World Cup championship, 16 years after their first title at the 2010 South Africa tournament. Notably, 2007-born Yamal, in his first World Cup appearance, secured the title and boosted his chances of winning the Ballon d’Or.
On the other hand, Argentina, who had aimed for a second consecutive World Cup title, crumbled helplessly, damaging their pride. It was a hollow end to Messi’s final dance.
Messi literally did nothing. He became the second player, after Brazil’s Cafu, to appear in three different World Cup finals and the oldest field player ever to feature in a World Cup final at 39. However, he was virtually erased from the pitch.
According to Opta, Messi touched the ball only once in the first 15 minutes, and that single touch was the kickoff. He remained invisible for the rest of the match and attempted his first shot only in the 117th minute. Even that was blocked by a defender. Messi recorded 0 valid shots on target and 0 touches inside the opponent’s box in 120 minutes.
ESPN Deportes posted an image of Messi’s missing jersey with the caption, “Messi’s performance today… 0 valid shots in 120 minutes.” When Messi was neutralized, Argentina could not avoid humiliation. While Argentina had scored 19 goals up to the semifinals, they became the first team in World Cup final history to fail to record a single shot in 90 minutes.
