President Bola Tinubu has condemned the ongoing xenophobic attacks in South Africa, urging the country to remember that its current freedom stems from the sacrifices made by African nations, including Nigeria. Speaking in Freetown, Sierra Leone, during the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, which he attended through Vice President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu noted that Nigeria has evacuated over 1,490 citizens in response to the violence.
He stated that the Nigerian government stands ready to continue its efforts to protect nationals amidst escalating anti-immigrant protests. President Tinubu called on ECOWAS to express a unified condemnation of the recent attacks against Nigerians and other Africans, advocating for the issue to be put on the agenda for discussion at the upcoming African Union session.
“This type of intolerance is totally unacceptable under any guise,” he emphasized. Tinubu’s remarks come as many foreign nationals have been displaced due to the violence in South Africa.
