Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the vice-presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has voiced strong support for the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his commitment to serve only one term if elected in the upcoming 2027 presidential election.
In a recent interview on News Central’s program, Kwankwaso responded to questions regarding Obi’s promise of a single four-year tenure, stating, “I personally believe Peter Obi is a gentleman and I have every reason to trust him, especially since he made this promise publicly.” He emphasized that there should be no reason for doubt regarding Obi’s intentions.
Kwankwaso explained that the power-sharing arrangement within the NDC was founded on mutual trust and consensus among coalition partners. He asserted that it is vital for the southern region of Nigeria to complete an eight-year presidential term as previously agreed by members of the alliance.
“We believe the southern part of the country should complete its second term, and with that, to the hearing of everybody in this country, I don’t believe any gentleman would want to renege,” he said.
Additionally, the former governor of Kano State highlighted that beyond individual ambitions, the coalition has established a shared governance roadmap to guide future leadership. He reiterated the NDC’s focus on implementing its collective agenda rather than promoting specific political interests.
“We have collectively developed short-term, medium-term, and long-term plans for the country. It does not matter whether it is him from the Obidient side or my humble self from the Kwankwasiyya side. We believe we have an agenda,” Kwankwaso added.
He concluded by expressing that the coalition would ensure continuity in its programs, irrespective of who ultimately occupies the presidential seat. “We will do our utmost to ensure that whoever comes, whether it’s Peter, myself, or anyone else, adheres to our agreed-upon program,” Kwankwaso stated.
