ABUJA: President Bola Tinubu has urged religious and spiritual leaders to actively oppose terrorism and the misuse of religion to justify violence. Speaking on his behalf, Secretary to the Government of the Federation Senator George Akume delivered the message during the Grand Maulud of Sheikh Ahmad Al-Tijani in Kano.
Tinubu emphasized the critical role that religious leaders play in combating violence and called for a united front against acts such as kidnapping and banditry. He stressed that true devotion to God cannot be achieved through the destruction of innocent lives.
The President highlighted the importance of peace education, religious literacy, and the moral upbringing of youth, urging spiritual leaders to remind both citizens and political leaders of their responsibilities towards justice and compassion.
He noted the gathering’s significance during a time of global conflict and uncertainty, referencing a UNHCR report that indicated 117.8 million people were forcibly displaced worldwide by the end of 2025. The scale of these challenges, he pointed out, underscores the need for spiritual leadership.
Tinubu recognized the Tijjaniyya community’s potential to foster reconciliation and counter violent extremism across the Sahel and West Africa, calling on religious leaders to leverage their networks for humanitarian efforts.
He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to regional cooperation and dialogue, emphasizing that the country’s strategic position makes its stability vital for surrounding regions.
The President welcomed attendees from various countries and paid tribute to the late Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, highlighting his legacy and contributions to moral instruction and peace.
