Former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar recently stated that President Bola Tinubu is 90 years old, asserting he has proof to back up this claim, which he plans to present in court. The comments were made during an interview with BBC Hausa, where Atiku also addressed inquiries about his own age as he positions himself for the 2027 presidential election.
Atiku dismissed concerns regarding his age, emphasizing he remains healthy and capable of serving in leadership. He stated, “You went and voted for someone who is 80, I mean 90 years old. How old is President Bola, 90?” He continued to argue that age should not determine a candidate’s ability to govern, citing his own experience and competence.
In response to Atiku’s claims, Reno Omokri, Nigeria’s Ambassador-designate to Mexico, challenged the assertion, referring to a photograph of Tinubu taken in 1996, which Omokri argued undermines Atiku’s credibility regarding the President’s age.
The Nigerian Presidency also reacted to Atiku’s promises to “open the borders” if elected, asserting that most land borders were already reopened in March 2024. Special Adviser to the President, Sunday Dare, questioned Atiku’s intentions, stressing the importance of maintaining security while allowing legitimate trade.
Atiku further criticized the current administration’s handling of economic policies, particularly around fuel subsidies, and reaffirmed his commitment to restoring these subsidies to alleviate hardships for Nigerians.
As political debates continue to intensify ahead of the elections, Atiku insists that his experience and qualifications remain relevant, despite criticisms concerning his age.
