The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has issued a strong warning to Nigerians regarding the acceptance of packages from abroad, particularly those sent by relatives and friends. This advisory follows a growing trend in which illicit drugs are being concealed within consolidated cargoes.
Femi Babafemi, the agency’s spokesperson, alerted the public via a social media post on September 13. He noted that certain Nigerians living overseas have been sending packages that contain illegal substances, specifically types of cannabis known as Colorado and Loud, to individuals in Nigeria. These unsuspecting recipients are often listed as consignees, which places them at risk of arrest and prosecution.
The NDLEA urges individuals who are not involved in drug trafficking to avoid accepting such consignments, especially when they are unsure of the package’s contents. Babafemi emphasized that many individuals have already faced legal consequences due to similar situations, as ongoing operations by NDLEA agents continue to unveil various cases.
“If you’re not part of the syndicate, don’t accept to receive consignments on behalf of your ‘abroad’ brother or sister or friend particularly if you don’t know the full content of the consignment,” he cautioned.
