The Department of State Services (DSS) has alerted religious leaders in Osun State to a potential threat from terrorists aiming to target places of worship and public gathering areas. This warning comes as part of efforts to ensure safety ahead of the 2027 general elections.
During separate meetings with the Muslim community and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) on September 9, DSS officials conveyed intelligence reports indicating plans to instigate unrest in the southern regions of Nigeria, specifically targeting the South-West.
Alhaji Mustapha Olawuyi, President of the Osun State Muslim Community, confirmed the authenticity of the security alert, noting that religious organizations were advised to implement protective measures. He mentioned that the terror plots could be linked to certain political motives aimed at disrupting the electoral process. Suggestions included increased vigilance during religious services and precautions against suspicious individuals.
Pastor John Adeleke, the Osun State CAN Chairman, also confirmed the security advisory, urging churches and educational institutions to heighten security awareness. An excerpt from the communication shared among church leaders detailed specific targets identified by the DSS, which include gathering places such as churches, mosques, schools, and markets.
The DSS recommended various safety strategies, such as monitoring vehicle parking during services and employing night guards at religious facilities. Both religious leaders expressed their commitment to enhancing security measures within their communities as they prepare for the upcoming elections.
