During the 2026 BRICS Summit held in New Delhi, President Bola Tinubu emphasized the importance of reforming global governance and international financial institutions. Speaking through Vice President Kashim Shettima, he asserted that the time has come for a governance architecture that is more representative and equitable.
Tinubu noted Nigeria’s commitment to supporting institutions that mirror current economic and demographic trends. He urged a transition from mere dialogue within BRICS to measurable development outcomes, encouraging foreign investors to see Nigeria as a gateway to Africa under the African Continental Free Trade Area.
The President outlined Nigeria’s vision of economic resilience, aimed at creating a stable economy capable of weathering global disruptions. His administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda focuses on macroeconomic stability, production diversification, infrastructure development, and fostering private-sector growth.
Furthermore, Tinubu called for collaboration in various sectors, including agriculture, healthcare, and technology. He highlighted Nigeria’s youthful population as a key asset driving innovation and outlined specific areas for investment, such as artificial intelligence and digital skills.
In his remarks, he affirmed Nigeria’s readiness to engage in partnerships that enhance trade, technology transfer, and human capital development. He underscored the critical nature of balancing climate action with development goals, advocating for renewable energy and sustainable agricultural practices.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, opening the summit, stressed the growing confidence in BRICS among countries in the Global South, noting the bloc’s commitment to inclusivity and sustainability in its initiatives.
