Nigeria’s U-17 women’s football team, known as the Flamingos, secured their spot in the final of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup by defeating Brazil 3-1 in a commanding performance. Head coach Akeem Busari commended his players for their bravery, discipline, and commitment following their semi-final victory.
During the match, the Flamingos demonstrated their attacking prowess, registering a staggering 35 attempts on goal compared to Brazil’s seven, which highlighted Nigeria’s commanding presence on the pitch. Brazil’s only consolation goal came from Greise Kelly in the 89th minute.
Coach Busari noted the significance of reaching the final, marking it as a pivotal achievement for both the players and the broader landscape of Nigerian and African football. He acknowledged Brazil’s technical abilities but emphasized his team’s strong defensive strategies and character.
“It’s an awesome thing, it’s a great achievement,” Busari said. The coach reflected on the challenging nature of the match and praised his players for their effort and tenacity.
The Flamingos have drawn inspiration from Argentina’s remarkable comeback journey during the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where Argentina rebounded from an initial loss to ultimately win the trophy. This parallel served as motivation for the Nigerian team, particularly after their own opening defeat to Poland.
Queen Joseph, who scored the opening goal against Brazil, expressed pride in representing her country and highlighted how Argentina’s success had positively influenced their mindset.
Awawu Bashiru, who played a key role in the semi-final with two goals, celebrated her performance, having earned her first start in the tournament. Her efforts were recognized as she was named Player of the Match.
With Brazil now behind them, Nigeria will shift their focus to Japan for the final match. Coach Busari pointed out that their earlier victory against DPR Korea could provide valuable insights as they prepare for this crucial showdown. He is optimistic that the same strategic approach and discipline displayed in previous matches will guide them in securing the championship.
As Nigeria approaches its historic final appearance, Busari and the Flamingos aim to make a significant mark on women’s football in Nigeria and Africa.
