President Bola Tinubu has extended his congratulations to Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, for securing a spot in the final of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco. This achievement marks a significant milestone as it is Nigeria’s inaugural appearance in the final of this tournament since its inception in 2008.
The Flamingos earned their place in the final after a commanding 3-1 victory over Brazil in the semi-finals held at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat. Queen Joseph initiated the scoring for Nigeria in the 56th minute, followed by Awawu Bashiru, who netted two goals within nine minutes. Despite a late goal from Brazil’s Greise Kelly, the match remained firmly in Nigeria’s favor.
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu expressed confidence in the team’s ability to overcome Japan in the final. He encouraged the players to maintain their determination and fighting spirit leading up to the championship match on Saturday, highlighting that their performance has brought pride and joy to Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora.
President Tinubu also praised the coaching staff and supporters who have contributed to the team’s success. He called on the nation to unite in support of the Flamingos, emphasizing their role as young ambassadors inspiring future generations of athletes. “Go for the trophy, Flamingos!” he urged.
The Flamingos’ journey in the tournament has featured a remarkable comeback after an initial defeat to Poland. Under the guidance of head coach Akeem Busari, the team recorded victories against Puerto Rico, DPR Korea, Mexico, and Venezuela, culminating in their semi-final win over Brazil. With this remarkable run, Nigeria has already achieved its best finish in the tournament’s history, but a win against Japan would secure the nation’s first title in this category.
