Tony Elumelu significantly aided the recovery of Afrinvest in 2011 by providing a crucial loan of $1 million at a time when the investment bank was struggling due to the global financial crisis. This support came from Elumelu’s personal funds and was acknowledged by Afrinvest’s CEO, Ike Chioke, in a letter.
Fifteen years ago, Afrinvest faced one of the most challenging periods in its history as it worked to rebuild and recapitalize the business. Chioke reflected on how Elumelu’s investment was not just a financial contribution but also a vote of confidence in his leadership capabilities and the potential for Afrinvest to recover and thrive.
Chioke announced that he has finished repaying the loan this June, describing Elumelu’s assistance as a profound act of friendship and trust. The financial support has been pivotal in transforming Afrinvest into a diversified regional financial services firm, enhancing its offerings in areas such as asset management and investment banking.
Elumelu, who actively promotes the concept of “Africapitalism,” continues to engage in various philanthropic endeavors across Africa. His Tony Elumelu Foundation recently celebrated its sixteenth anniversary, claiming to have disbursed over $100 million in funding to 24,000 African entrepreneurs and creating over 1.5 million jobs since its inception.
Looking ahead, the foundation plans to support an additional 3,200 entrepreneurs within the current year, reinforcing its commitment to fostering economic development on the continent.
