The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has emphasized the importance of unity among Igbo elders, leaders, and stakeholders. He made this call during the South East Stakeholders’ Convergence (SESC) held in Owerri, Imo State, where he outlined the detrimental effects of disunity on the political strength of the Ndi Igbo community.
Kalu urged attendees to engage proactively in both socio-economic issues and the national political landscape. He noted that true peace in Igbo communities can only be realized when leaders work together. “Unity is strength. We will achieve more when we are united. The need for unity cannot be overemphasized. Peace leads to the development of communities,” he stated.
During the event, which was chaired by former Military Governor of Imo State, Senator Ike Nwachukwu (Rtd), Kalu acknowledged the commitment of the attending elders, recognizing their willingness to prioritize communal discussions over personal matters. He described their participation as a reflection of patriotism and love for Igbo land.
Kalu indicated that younger generations are inspired by such displays of unity, illustrating leadership as a relay race where one generation passes the baton to the next. He expressed the need for Ndi Igbo to reassess their stance on political engagement, noting that many have distanced themselves from national politics since the post-war era.
He warned that continued disunity could lead to a loss of cultural heritage and political direction. Kalu pointed out that to have a significant impact at the national level, the Igbo community must present a united front. He stated that past decisions to focus solely on personal development rather than collective political action have not benefited the region.
In concluding his remarks, Kalu called for a unified agenda to enhance the political standing of Ndi Igbo. He believed that a unified approach would bring about greater respect and influence within Nigeria’s political system.
The meeting attracted a diverse array of participants, including Governor Hope Uzodinma, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and notable figures from various sectors, all coming together to address the collective progress of the Igbo community.
