Nigeria played a crucial role in presiding over significant elections during the United Nations General Assembly’s Fifth Committee, where key appointments were made for the International Civil Service Commission and the Independent Audit Advisory Committee.
Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, Nigeria’s permanent representative to the UN, chaired the elections, which led to the selection of C.D. Mohammed from Mauritania as the Chair of the International Civil Service Commission. Mohammed secured 102 votes, surpassing the 93 votes needed for the majority, while his opponent, Maria from Zimbabwe, received 82 votes. This recommendation will be presented to the General Assembly for his four-year term commencing on January 1, 2027.
In another significant outcome, Israel’s candidate Shai Mazai was recommended for the Independent Audit Advisory Committee after receiving 134 votes. His appointment will be for a three-year term starting January 1, 2027. The Fifth Committee also evaluated other bodies requiring appointments.
In a move to ensure transparency, Ambassador Ibrahim ordered the ballot boxes to be opened prior to voting, enabling delegates to verify their integrity. He commended the delegates for their cooperation and patience throughout the process, congratulated the candidates recommended for the respective roles, and urged them to maintain the integrity of the Committee. The sessions concluded with a request from Ambassador Ibrahim for the decisions made to be communicated to the General Assembly for further action.
