Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has challenged President Bola Tinubu to provide a transparent account of funds accumulated from petrol subsidy savings and external borrowings, which exceed $100 billion. In a statement shared through his official social media account, Obi emphasized the need for these financial resources to lead to meaningful improvements in the lives of Nigerian citizens.
This call for accountability follows a recent exchange of remarks between the two politicians, where President Tinubu critiqued Obi’s record in handling the erosion crisis in Anambra State during a campaign visit to Akwa Ibom.
Obi suggested that the President should engage directly with citizens across Nigeria’s states, encouraging him to visit the remaining 33 states to clearly explain the government’s financial activities, including the ₦15.8 trillion saved from the removal of the fuel subsidy and the significant government revenues resulting from increased taxation.
Obi stated that Nigerians deserve to know how many citizens have been lifted out of poverty, the number of out-of-school children who have returned to education, and the progress made in constructing primary healthcare centers. He also called for an explanation regarding improvements in electricity supply and the ongoing security situation in the country.
Emphasizing the importance of accountability and transparency, Obi noted that the effectiveness of public resources should have a measurable impact on citizens’ lives.
