3 Nigerians killed in cinema … state of insecurity widens…
USAfricaonline.com Jan 4, 2011: The recurring problem of insecurity has struck again, a few hours ago, in Nigeria; this time in the northeastern predominantly Muslim-dominated city of Maiduguri. 3 persons were shot to death at a movie theatre in the area. Police commissioner Mohamed Jinjiri Abubakar has said it is politically-motivated violence: “Three people were killed by assailants believed to be thugs loyal to a local politician in a cinema last night.”
He said the radical supporters of an aspirant in the April 2011 elections chased some other supporters of a competing aspirant into the cinema.
Abubakar added that: “The gunmen stormed the cinema and indiscriminately fired into the crowd, killing three people on the spot.”
He ruled out the Islamic fundamentalist violent group Boko Haram as the executors. “Not all attacks are perpetrated by Boko Haram members, politicians have hands in some of the attacks.”
Maiduguri is commercially active but has faced the onslaught of attacks the past 100 days by the Boko Haram and other radicals who have killed hundreds, burned churches (most recent being the Victory Baptist church in the same Maiduguri) and wounded scores of Nigerians.
USAfrica reported yesterday, January 3rd, the plans by Nigeria’s President Jonathan to appoint an anti-terrorism adviser as insecurity widens across every major section of Nigeria. see related report here
