USAfrica: Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the 24-year-old Nigerian, on trial since yesterday Tuesday October 11, 2011 in Detroit, for plotting and attempting to bring down a Detroit-bound airliner on Christmas day in 2009 with a bomb sewn into his underwear, has suddenly pleaded guilty of the charges a few minutes ago today Wednesday October 12, 2011.
He has owned up to charges including conspiracy to commit terrorism and attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction. The airline was Northwest Airlines flight 253 from Amsterdam – 278 other passengers and 11 crew members.
He made the guilty plea to all 8 charges in the presence of U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmunds. The charges is expected to draw a maximum penalty of life sentence in prison.
Abdulmutallab, the son of a wealthy Nigerian banker and investor told the court his actions were set to fulfilling a “religious duty” and in a bizarre turn, he claimed his underwear bomb was a “blessed weapon to save the lives of innocent Muslims.”
The young, privileged man who had some training and motivation with al-Qaeda affiliated groups continued that “The United States should be warned that if they continue to persist and promote the blasphemy of Mohammed and the prophets … the United States should await a great calamity that will befall them through the hands of the mujahedeen soon…. If you laugh with us now we will laugh with you later on the day of judgment.”
Nigerians at home and abroad were shocked by the fact of his actions in 2009 and afterwards. See related, exclusive USAfricaonline.com news and analyses of the events at the time, here.
