USAfrica Special report by Chido Nwangwu.
USAfrica, June 30, 2012: “I swear by almighty God that I will sincerely protect the republican order and that I fully respect the constitution and the rule of the law and completely take care of people’s interests, preserve the nation’s independency and safety of its lands,” said Dr. Mohamed Morsi as he formally took over as President of Egypt. He took his presidential oath before the General Assembly of the Supreme Constitutional Court.
The man has promised to lead Egypt to “a modern, constitutional, national and civil country…. Egyptians today have established their new life with freedom…. I’ll govern out of being a servant for the nation hired by the people.”
He added that with his swearing in: “Now the great Egyptian army will go back to their mission which is protecting the nation’s borders and preserving the armed forces strong in light of law and constitution.”
As was previously reported here on USAfricaonline.com Morsi defeated the pro-establishment, pro-Mubarak former Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq, in the presidential elections run-off of June 16 and June 17, 2012.
A transition event was held on Saturday afternoon June 30, 2012 at the Hikestep military base in east Cairo, and involved the head of the supreme military council Hussein Tantawi. Remarkably, the Supreme Council of Armed Forces ascribed to itself key powers previously held by other Presidents of Egypt; weakening the capacity of Morsi.
In what USAfrica analysts see as a subtle reference to the changes in the civil society and determination of Egyptians to challenge the excesses of the Supreme Council of Armed Forces (SCAF), the former leader of the Muslim Brotherhood said: “Egypt has institutions with loyal people who know the meaning of respecting the constitution and the laws.” Morsi is expected to take Egypt to a more radical, actively Islamist path .
USAfrica projects that Morsi and the Egyptian Supreme Council of Armed Forces will have some conflicts over lines of power, military command and direction of the very big African-Arab country.
