USAfricaonline.com: A special recognition for community, networking and civic service came on Saturday, August 18, 2012, to a Nigerian American Mr. Ejike
Edward Okpa II as an honorary Admiral in the Texas Navy.
The honor was given at the Quarterly Meeting on the Admiral Chester W. Nimitz Squadron by Commander Mark D. Kelsey — on behalf of Texas Governor Rick Perry.
The hosts note that Governor Perry grants these commissions to individuals who have demonstrated outstanding community support and service for the citizens of Texas.
Admiral Kelsey commended the honoree, noting that “I know of no one more deserving of being commissioned by the Governor than Admiral Okpa. (He) has been a trusted and reliable champion for community service and volunteerism for many decades. His proven track record of success in fundraising and support of the many organizations that he is a member of tells us much about how he channels his leadership skills, unbounded energy and strong intellect into doing good things for his fellow man.”
Admiral Okpa thanked the squadron leaders, saying “I am honored and humbled to have received this recognition from the Governor and I only wish my mother and father in Nigeria could have been alive to be with me today. They would have been very proud of me.”
An insightful presentation titled “How the Texas Navy Saved the Republic” was made by Admiral Ann Shafer, a direct descendant of Samuel Rhoads Fisher, the first Secretary of the Texas Navy.
The squadron team noted that the admirals in the Texas Navy are required to help propagate the history of the Texas Navy. To that end, in 2011 the members of the Admiral Chester W. Nimitz Squadron were instrumental in having Texas Navy history reintroduced into the school curriculum in Texas for elementary school children.
In September 2012, Admiral Okpa and other members of the Squadron were in attendance at the Commissioning of the USS Fort Worth in Galveston, Texas.
Okpa noted in a statement to USAfricaonline.com and CLASSmagazine (Houston)that there were more than 60 Admirals and guests, including his wife Mrs. Ronke Olusanya-Okpa, Tayo and Bolanle Addo, Mrs. Nike Addo, and Milla Perry Jones, older sister of Gov Perry and Admiral Okpa’s classmate from Leadership Dallas and Legacy Dallas.
Okpa is a commentator on public policy issues, real estate businessman and a supporter of Gov. Perry.

USAfrica: Ikemba ODUMEGWU OJUKWU’s farewell in Aba, today February 28, 2012, reflected a fitting tribute, historically meaningful celebration, proper regard and deserving appreciation of the greatest Igbo, in my opinion, to have ever lived (like him or hate him).
I SALUTE Aba (aka Enyimba city), the robust and fearless town I was born, bred and raised, for giving the Ikemba, our Ochiagha, Gburugburu, Oka oburu uzo, dike na ndu ma n’onwu, mgbadike anyi, a hero’s farewell.
To the Ikemba, may your valiant soul rest in peace and dignity.
We will, and I, Chido Nwangwu, will never forget to continue to tell my generation and the next about your towering courage through tempest and thunder; through sorrow, pain, tears, blood…. •Dr. Chido Nwangwu, Founder & Publisher of USAfrica multimedia networks, first African-owned, U.S-based newspaper published on the internet USAfricaonline.com; and recipient of several journalism and public policy awards, was recently profiled by the CNN International for his pioneering works on multimedia/news/public policy projects for Africans and Americans. http://edition.cnn.com/video/#/video/international/2010/07/29/mpa.african.media.bk.a.cnn.
