Morocco’s National Security Services, in collaboration with Customs officials, successfully intercepted a smuggling attempt involving 3.61 tonnes of cannabis resin at the Port of Casablanca on Wednesday, December 1, 2024.
The illicit drugs were concealed within an international shipping container disguised as part of a fish meal cargo and were intended for delivery to a European port.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities have launched a comprehensive investigation to trace the origin and final destination of the shipment. Efforts are also underway to identify the individuals responsible for exporting the container, as well as members of the criminal network involved in the smuggling operation. The probe aims to uncover connections both locally and internationally.
Previous Anti-Drug Efforts
Morocco’s law enforcement agencies have demonstrated consistent efforts to combat drug trafficking. In 2023, authorities recorded 99,513 drug trafficking cases, leading to the arrest of 130,212 individuals suspected of involvement.
During the same period, security forces seized 81 tonnes and 175 kilograms of cannabis, reflecting a 17% decrease in drug confiscation compared to the previous year.
