Amid ongoing political tensions in Rivers State, suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara has paid tribute to the resilience and commitment of workers, applauding their steadfast service in the face of socio-economic and governance disruptions.
In a statement released on Thursday, May 1, 2025, by his Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, Fubara praised workers across various sectors, describing them as the “backbone of the state’s progress” and “a beacon of hope for a more prosperous future.”
Reflecting on the 2024 Workers’ Day theme — “Ensuring Safety and Health at Work in a Changing Climate” — the suspended governor emphasized the growing importance of occupational safety and climate-responsible labour practices. He called for greater focus on shielding workers from environmental risks and workplace hazards as a key element of sustainable development.
Fubara also recognized the federal government’s efforts toward improving labour conditions nationwide, stating his appreciation for President Bola Tinubu’s support of reforms and policies that enhance workplace safety and climate resilience.
Despite the current political instability in Rivers, Fubara expressed admiration for the dedication shown by state workers during uncertain times.
“Your sacrifices and sense of duty are the cornerstone of our state’s stability and progress,” he said.
Reiterating his commitment to the welfare of the workforce, he encouraged all employers—public and private—to uphold labour laws, respect the rights of workers, and foster an environment of fairness and dignity. He further stressed the need to continually improve working conditions in accordance with both legal and ethical standards.
Fubara concluded with a call for unity and perseverance, urging citizens not to lose hope. He prayed for divine guidance for leaders and restated his determination to shape a workplace culture rooted in dignity, opportunity, and shared prosperity.
He expressed confidence that “the forces of justice, peace, and progress will ultimately prevail.”
