Military forces foiled an attempted mass abduction in the Unguwar Rogo area of Kaura Namoda Local Government, Zamfara State, leaving two women injured by gunfire. The incident unfolded on a Sunday, with the intervention carried out by the Joint Task Force North-west, known as Operation Fansan Yamma.
According to a statement from Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, spokesperson for the operation, troops were alerted by a distress call about suspected terrorists attacking civilians on a local route. Initial intelligence suggests that the assault may have been a retaliatory act following the recent detention of individuals alleged to be linked with the terrorist organization.
The military reported that the attackers, believed to be under the command of an individual identified as Mallam Shuaibu, launched their assault from a millet farm, targeting vehicles on the road. This led to several motorists losing control and veering off the path.
In response to the crisis, troops promptly mobilized to the scene, engaged the attackers, and managed to rescue nine civilians, including an infant. The two women who were wounded were evacuated for medical treatment, though no updates on their condition have been provided.
The military has not revealed the number of suspects apprehended or any casualties suffered by either side during the encounter. Operation Fansan Yamma has committed to ongoing actions against armed groups in the region.
