Houston, December 13, 2010: The African Professionals Organization (AfriPRO Houston) has given its 2010 Distinguished Professional award to Dr. Chido Nwangwu, Founder & Publisher of USAfrica multimedia networks and CLASSmagazine for his pioneering and leadership roles in the areas of public policy, journalism and global digital media: “We are most especially excited on his recognition and coverage by the world’s news leader CNN International for his work in establishing the first African-owned, U.S-based professional newspaper published on the internet
and for his excellence and diligence in the journalism profession. This combined with his (several) Journalism Excellence awards make him more than deserving of the award.”
Houston’s AfriPro President Okechukwu Ofili adds in the citation that it is important to state that “the Distinguished Professional award is given to individuals who positively impact the African community in Houston through their profession and whose positive publicity in the international media has lead to pride in the African Continent. We strongly believe that Dr. Nwangwu meets and exceeds all the above requirement for the Distinguished Professional award.”
Other honorees are NFL star and Texans defensive player Amobi Okoye (Image award), the American basketball veteran and humanitarian Dikembe Mutombo (Merit award) and a dedicated non-profit humanitarian organization, Indego Africa (charity of the year) for its empowerment of people especially in Rwanda. Indego was represented by co-founders Mr. & Mrs. Thomas Mitro.
The awards were given to the honorees at the group’s finely organized and well-attended 4th annual gala on Saturday December 11, 2010 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel near River Oaks, Houston.

Chido, first continental African to be inducted into the influential 100 Black Men of America group and former adviser to Houston’s former Mayor Lee Brown, has expressed his “profound appreciation to AfriPro Houston President Okechukwu Ofili, AfriPro Founder Folake Ayoola, all of your members for this very special recognition for my works through USAfrica since 1993. It is, equally, a recognition for the USAfrica team and all those who contribute and sacrifice to make it all possible. Although our finances are very, very small, we make a difference, daily, through the active deployment and use of other business resources of active intellect and global human contacts. I thank God for this honor from my own folks, the outstanding and promising younger generation of Africans in the U.S. Accordingly, I dedicate this award to Chido Nwangwu II, my 9-year old son who’s a potential, future member of AfriPro.”
Event hostess was the resourceful and lively Nnete of Houston’s hip-hop radio 97.9 FM.
AfriPro announced some scholarships. The group also gave its officer of the year award to Miss Uche Chibueze while Victor Ike was named Member of the Year.
USAfrica notes that the honorees’ awards handler was Ijeoma Udenkwo, journal editor Tina Ike Nwanekezie, 2010 gala chair Ngozi Ndukwe. An incoming President was announced as Ugonwanne Onwudiegwu. The board members are Ms. Ayoola, Folasayo Ayoola, Abayomi Majiyagbe, Oluwaseun Oyeniran and Kingsley Ewetuya.
