President Bola Tinubu has approved the employment of 774 National Health Fellows as part of an initiative by the Federal Ministry of Health aimed at driving sustained improvements in Nigeria’s healthcare system.
During the inauguration of the program at the State House on Thursday, March 6, 2025, President Tinubu officially announced the employment of the fellows, commending the initiative and its rigorous selection process.
Commitment to Youth Empowerment
“This programme is a transformative initiative that underscores my administration’s commitment to harnessing the immense potential of Nigeria’s greatest asset – its young people,” the President stated.
He highlighted that with over 60% of Nigerians under the age of 30, the country possesses one of the most energetic, resourceful, and dynamic youth populations in the world. This, he noted, presents unparalleled opportunities for innovation, economic growth, and social transformation.
The President emphasized that the National Health Fellows initiative is one of several platforms his administration has introduced to empower Nigerian youths, equipping them with the skills needed to excel and contribute meaningfully to national development.
Fellows Encouraged to Embrace Leadership Roles
Addressing the fellows, President Tinubu urged them to fully embrace the opportunities presented by the program, seeing themselves as future leaders of Nigeria’s healthcare system.
“Your selection is more than just recruitment; it is a testament to our commitment to building a nation where every Nigerian, regardless of social status, gender, or creed, has equal opportunities.
“You are this country’s greatest asset, and we remain dedicated to fostering a future where Nigeria stands as a nation of pride for all,” he affirmed.
Strengthening Nigeria’s Healthcare Sector
The President underscored the program’s vision to cultivate a pipeline of healthcare leaders who will drive meaningful, long-term change and innovation within the sector.
“Healthcare is a critical pillar of national development. No country can thrive if its people are unhealthy. An unsustainable health program poses risks, while sustainable development hinges on a robust healthcare system.
“You are the pillars of this vision, and I am proud to be here with you today,” he stated.
Support from Key Government Officials
Prof. Mohammed Ali Pate, Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, emphasized that the 774 fellows will play a vital role in revolutionizing Nigeria’s health sector.
“The social movement to improve the health of Nigerians has begun, and we are already witnessing positive results,” he said.
Other key figures, including Mr. Wale Edun, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy; Mr. Ayodele Olawande, Minister of Youth; and Ogiame Atuwatse III, the Olu of Warri, provided additional encouragement through inspiring messages to the fellows.
The employment of the fellows—one from each local council—was based on a merit-based selection process. Minister Pate highlighted that the fellows were chosen from a highly competitive pool of 360,000 applicants, reinforcing the program’s commitment to excellence and fairness.
