Ousmane Sonko, Senegalese opposition leader, has rejected any attempts to dialogue with President Macky Sall and called for civil disobedience against the judiciary.
Sonko, though, refuted accusations that he was undermining the legal system.
Sonko stated last month that his life was in danger and that he had proof he would be killed on March 16th while traveling to court to answer for rape claims.
On March 30, a different court sentenced opposition politician Ousmane Sonko to two months of probation with supervision for defaming a minister.
The opponent, who finished third in the 2019 presidential election, and his followers assert that the government is using the judiciary to delegitimize them and make way for the incumbent Macky Sall.
Sonko and his supporters claim that the government is trying to dissuade him from standing for president in February 2024 by manipulating the legal system.
Mr. Sonko is accused by the presidential party of seeking to bring the nation to a standstill and of exploiting the streets to evade prosecution.
In light of the tense atmosphere in the country and the limits on the right to assemble and speak freely, a number of human rights organizations have called on President Sall to drop his candidacy for a third term because it is unknown whether he will run in 2024.
